  22. Gannon Buhr Announces Departure from Prodigy Sponsorship

In a stunning announcement with under two weeks until the start of the 2023 season, Gannon Buhr announced on his Instagram that he is leaving Team Prodigy.

“Having been on Team Prodigy these past six years, I’ve accomplished a lot,” he said. “From my first Junior World championship win in 2017 to winning the 2022 United States Disc Golf Championship, I’ve grown a lot as a player and as a person. And after a lot of thought, I’ve made the difficult decision to leave Team Prodigy.”

Rumors had swirled around Buhr’s departure earlier in the offseason, but Prodigy’s announcement of Buhr as a part of their sponsored team last month seemed to put those rumors to bed. But the most promising young player in MPO is now on the move.

His new sponsor has not yet been announced.

Since the start of the 2022 season, Calvin Heimburg has been hotly discussed as a big target for a manufacturer with his Innova deal set to expire at the end of this year. Innova isn’t taking any chances with letting Heimburg get to “free agency.”

The sport’s biggest disc manufacturer announced that Heimburg, after entertaining other offers, has re-signed on a five year endorsement deal that runs through the end of 2027.

Kyle Klein has extended his endorsement contract with Discmania for four years, keeping him with the Finnish company through 2026.

Although specifics of the new deal have not been announced, it is worth a guaranteed six figures annually with room to expand, Ultiworld Disc Golf has learned. Most modern manufacturer sponsorship contracts offer players a base stipend and also the opportunity to earn significant additional income through royalties on signature or tour series disc sales. Eagle McMahon, the 2022 European Open champion who has been rehabilitating a shoulder injury sustained last October, announced on Instagram that he will be withdrawing from USDGC and the Disc Golf Pro Tour Championship play-in and ending his 2022 season.

“This was a difficult decision but believe it’s the right decision for me long term for both my mental and physical well-being,” he wrote. “My intention is to work as hard and smart as I can to achieve a productive off-season so I can compete on tour healthy and capable in 2023.” (more…)

  26. Largest-Ever Pro Worlds Purse to Exceed $200,000

The purse at this week’s PDGA Pro World Championships will be at least $200,000, tournament director Doug Bjerkaas announced during the event’s opening ceremonies on Monday. It will be the largest payout in the event’s history.

“I believe, for taking [only] the FPO and MPO field, no one has ever had the opportunity to start this number with a two,” said Bjerkaas. “$200,000 will be awarded to disc golfers that compete and play well.” Bjerkaas said that the “biggest chunk of money” in the purse is coming from ticket sales to spectators.
