The fairways of Sunset Hills were no match for an inspired Open Women’s field during round two of the Ledgestone Insurance Open.
Four players tied or beat the previous FPO course record during an eventful moving day that saw players making big jumps into the top five, and double-digit leaps up further down the leaderboard. With all the commotion, it’s still Catrina Allen and Paige Pierce in first and second, respectively, two strokes apart with 18 holes to go.
Allen came in with a one stroke lead but had turned over first to Pierce after hole 3. It was the first of four lead changes between the two during the round. A bogey for Pierce on hole 16 and a birdie for Allen on hole 18 would eventually settle things close to how they started; Allen is ahead by two at 17-under par 103 total.
An 11-under par 49 rated at 1019 was highlighted by Allen’s eagle on the par 5 hole 6. She had four Circle 2 birdies and only one bogey. Allen leads the field in parked percentage at 25%, although her C1X putting is still not as sharp as she’d want.
Pierce was no slouch with a 1009-rated, 10-under par 50 round. She continues to lead the division in birdie percentage, 53%, and C1 in regulation, 61%. An 89% C1X putting rate was a big improvement over round one, but still sees her in 19th in the category overall.
Haily King went bogey-free over the final 15 holes and finished the day at 7-under par 53, moving up three spots into third at 9-under par 111 total, six strokes behind Pierce. She hit four C1X putts for birdies to close out the round.
