Pittsburgh Penguins Goalie Casey DeSmith Adds Disc Golf To Mask Art

Ever seen a penguin throw a disc?

Hockey goalies are known for their extremely customized masks, and Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith has added his other athletic pursuit to his helmet for the 2018-2019 season.

DeSmith has only been playing disc golf for about three years, but he’s already become a big ambassador for the sport. He’s sponsored by Dynamic Discs, has a PDGA number reflecting his newfound hobby (#101294), and recently played his first tournament at the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open, where he finished tied for 35th out of 46 competitors in the Open field.

DeSmith’s Penguins mask features a mascot on one side throwing discs into a basket on the other. The Dynamic Discs’ “DD” is visible on the back plate as well.

Disc Golf Examiner caught up with DeSmith before the PFDO to see what was in his bag.

They also followed a practice round before the tournament with DeSmith, Grady Shue, and soon-to-be-crowned World Champion Paige Bjerkaas. Bjerkaas would win the PFDO FPO title later that week.
