He doesn’t always tour. But when he does, he comes to play.
Veteran pro Steve Rico threw a 10-under par 62 yesterday to take a two shot lead over Paul McBeth (-8) after round one of the “Steady” Ed Memorial Masters Cup in Santa Cruz, California. The West Coast stalwart and Legacy Discs co-owner has only played four other tournaments this season, but brought plenty of Masters Cup experience with him to the event, having logged four Top-3 finishes at DeLaveaga Park since 2010.
Ray Johnson and Dustin Keegan (-7) are tied for third place and will join Rico and McBeth on the lead card for today’s second round, while Eric McCabe, Eagle McMahon, and Ricky Wysocki (-6) are currently tied for fifth.
Catrina Allen and Paige Pierce continued their strong play in the Women’s Open division, with the two throwing 4-over par 76s to share first place. Paige Bjerkaas, Zoe Andyke, and Valarie Jenkins (+8) round out the Top-5, with Bjerkaas and Andyke getting the lead card nod. Normally, the tie would have resulted in the two players with the lowest PDGA numbers – in this case, Jenkins and Bjerkaas – comprising the rest of the top card, but PDGA Media Manager Matt Gregoire confirmed that a clerical error related to uploading tee times to the PDGA website bumped Jenkins to the chase card for the second round.
Today’s second round will find the MPO lead card teeing off at 1:20 p.m. local time, while the Women take center stage at 2:10 p.m.
