After 10 years with Vibram as the headliner, the annual tournament on the hallowed grounds of Maple Hill has a new presenting sponsor.
The 2018 iteration of the event will be called the MVP Open at Maple Hill, according to the tournament’s listing on the PDGA website. Tournament Director Steve Dodge and MVP Disc Sports Marketing Manager Steve Hollaway said they would reveal more details about the partnership in a forthcoming press release.
“We’re excited to make our announcement in the coming weeks,” Dodge said.
The move is significant for MVP, the Marlette, Michigan, manufacturer known for its overmolded disc design. While the company helped present the PDGA National Tour’s Disc Golf Hall of Fame Classic in 2015, it has yet to be the title sponsor of a premier stateside event. The brand was one of the Disc Golf Pro Tour’s Festival Partners this season.
Started in 2008 after four years as the Marshall Street Disc Golf Championship, the Vibram Open — or the Maple Hill Open presented by Vibram, in some instances — has been a perennial staple on the professional circuit. It was an NT for its first nine years before becoming an A-Tier on the Disc Golf Pro Tour this season. The 2018 version, which takes place from August 24-26, is again an A-Tier and will be the tour’s last event before its annual championship.
