Schusterick Reveals Shoulder Injury

Three-time U.S. Disc Golf Champion undergoing physical therapy, still playing

Three-time United States Disc Golf Champion Will Schusterick has been undergoing treatment for a shoulder impingement, he revealed in a Facebook post last night. The injury has ailed him for two years, he said, and has impacted his putting mechanics.

According to the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons, an impingement occurs when the bone on the top of the shoulder, the acromion, rubs against a tendon or bursa sac in the shoulder. It is a common injury that can impact a wide variety of athletes, as well as those with occupations that require repetitive lifting of the arm. Schusterick has been seeing a physical therapist in Nashville, Tennessee, in the hopes of regaining his vintage form.

“It’s time for me to conquer a new goal inside my disc golf game, which is getting back on top,” Schusterick said.

Schusterick also used the message to call out internet commenters who have blamed his recent decline in play — his PDGA player rating has dropped 14 points since this time last year — on his marriage.

“I could care less what someone says about my cystic acne on my neck, I could care less what someone says about the way I dress, or what people think of my mental game, or their opinion on the discs that I throw, but I just can’t listen to people blame my marriage for the way I’m playing anymore,” Schusterick said. “[My wife] Trish has been by my side when I won the USDGC, and by my side when I’ve gotten in the worst moods EVER after missing 12 putts inside the circle to end up not cashing. Trish is one of the main reasons why I haven’t gone CRAZY after missing so many shots I used to easily hit.”

Though he is working through the injury, Schusterick is still playing the Sula Open this week in Norway and is registered for the PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships, which begin June 21 in Augusta, Georgia.
