Extra Pins Cause Some Headaches At USWDGC

Two basket positions on each hole bring in extra hazards

The United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship got started today outside Lansing, Michigan, and a common problem many disc golfers have come across is rearing its head at the PDGA Major.

In order to accommodate 15 different divisions, and to make the schedule as amenable to players as possible, tournament organizers are using two pin positions on each course, as well as shotgun starts for all tee times. Unfortunately, that leaves some extra obstacles out on the fairways.

Example: Vanessa Van Dyken’s upshot during Friday’s round one on Rivers Edge.

Van Dyken and the FPO field are playing the long pins and layout Friday, but the short pins — or at least portions of the baskets — were still in place. There are many courses that keep two baskets in the ground simultaneously, and it’s a wrinkle to disc golf that players are accustomed to, but you hate to see extra strokes come into play during a Major because the course includes potential black ace targets.
