Extended Forecast

It should be noted ahead of time that confidence in this forecast is low. This is due to the extended nature of the forecast, as well as the current tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico. Weather models tend to handle early-season tropical systems a bit poorly, and the track of the system is very important to the details of this forecast.

Wednesday: A cold front may sag just south of the Augusta region on Wednesday, which will keep temperatures “cool.” However, the tradeoff may come in the form of rainfall. The front will serve as a focus for surface convergence, leading to off-and-on showers and thunderstorms. Wind should be from the southeast around 5-10 mph as the high temperature tops out around 81°.

  • 8:00: Mostly cloudy and 71°F. Isolated showers possible. Light southwest wind.
  • 2:00: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, with a temperature around 81°F. Southerly wind around 5-10 mph.

Hole To Watch: Hole 10 at the W.R. Jackson Memorial Course may play directly into a headwind on Wednesday. An 849-foot par 5 that demands an accurate shot off the tee, most players may opt for a hyzer flip drive. With a headwind in play, that puts players at risk of turning over into the dense rough that lines the fairway, so it could be time to stable-up.

Thursday: All the weather attention on Thursday will be focused on a tropical system making landfall along the Gulf Coast. It looks as though this tropical system will likely remain well west of Augusta, but it may spread more moisture to the east, leading to more intermittent showers through the day. As stronger, low-level southerly flow becomes more established, highs should climb back into the upper 80s. Surface winds should be out of the south around 5-10 mph.

  • 8:00: Mostly cloudy and 72°F. Isolated showers possible. Light southwest wind.
  • 2:00: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, with a temperature around 87°F. Southerly wind around 5-10 mph.

Hole To Watch: As the event moves to Fort Gordon, players may be faced with a due south wind that leads to some complications on hole 16, a downhill, 346-foot par 3. It’ll be interesting to see how players navigate this wooded hole. With the downhill elevation change, what will players throw, given the chance of a headwind?

Friday: As the remnants of the tropical system meander across the south-central United States, an upper-level ridge will build over the southeast United States. This will lead to the return of typical summertime weather for Augusta. Highs should top out in the upper 80s to low 90s, and abundant moisture should lead to some afternoon pop up showers and thunderstorms. Southwesterly wind around 5-10 mph should be expected.

  • 8:00: Mostly cloudy and 74°F. Light southwest wind.
  • 2:00: Partly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms. The temperature should be around 90°. Southwest wind around 5-10 mph.

Hole To Watch: A southwest wind may make things interesting on hole 7 at W.R. Jackson, a 381-foot par 3 that may feature a headwind. That development may actually benefit players on this hole, though, as a hyzer shot around a group of guardian trees in the middle of the fairway is needed to access the green. A headwind may ensure that the disc doesn’t fade too early into the aforementioned trees.

Saturday: The ridge will continue to build in on Saturday, leading to warming atmospheric temperatures that may limit showers and thunderstorms. An isolated storm may pop up, but they should remain less numerous. Highs will top out in the low to mid 90s, making Saturday the hottest day of the tournament. With humidity hanging out around 60 percent most of the day, the temperature will feel more like 100-105°F, so hydration will be key. Southwest winds are once again expected to be around 5-10 mph.

  • 8:00: Partly cloudy and 76°F. Southwest wind around 5 mph.
  • 2:00: Partly cloudy with isolated showers and storms possible. Temperatures around 93°F. Southwest wind around 5-10 mph.

Hole To Watch: The theme of making the longest hole even longer continues at Pro Worlds. Hole 18 at Fort Gordon may play directly into a headwind on championship Saturday, making this 1,004-foot par 5 feel like even more of a behemoth than it already is. Headwind and uphill for the world championship? The winner will have earned it.
