Disc golf, professional and otherwise, is getting bigger all the time and that means it’s busier than ever. It can be hard to keep up with everything. That’s where our Monthly Dime comes in, where we find and review 10 of the best and sometimes random disc golf related things that caught our attention each month. While we won’t pretend to be able to provide a comprehensive accounting of everything that has happened, we’ll do our best to keep this both informative and fun.
1. Eagle McMahon is no stranger to dropping vlogs, and he once again gave us 24 videos in December for Vlogmas. His Discmania teammate, Simon Lizotte, also decided to get in on the fun and put out some of the most entertaining and informative player-produced disc golf content we’ve seen in a long time. Also, shoutout to Tina Oakley who continues to put in work on the Whale Pants videos.
2. Staying with Discmania for a minute, they had a big month in December. Besides moving HQ to Colorado, it also released a new disc and extended some key players. We can’t get over CEO Jussi Meresmaa’s hat at Eagle’s signing though.
3. Even though we’re exhausted and the news hasn’t stopped yet, the flurry of team announcements and movements over the past month have been a real boon for this offseason.
4. One more Discmania adjacent story, the Schultz family — Thunder, 19; Silas, 15; Esther, 18 — was featured in Louisiana’s largest daily newspaper, the Advocate. All three siblings are signed to the Shield.
5. A prank meets #GrowTheSport?
My buddy puts up billboards for a living and is an avid disc golfer, so a group of of local discers pooled together enough money to pull this prank. He had no idea until he finished putting the billboard up. from funny
6. Another bit of crowdsourcing, and this time for a good cause. Hannah McBeth posted a rare Aviar-stamped Destroyer that belonged to Paul to a Facebook auction page to help fund her mother’s medical bills. A couple hefty bids later, including some from Jonathan Gomez of Jomez Pro, and the disc sold for $3,000, all going directly to Hannah’s mother. Because of the success, Hannah would also post a disc on a raffle page.
7. We may not have gotten any $3K discs, but I’m sure everyone reading this was gifted with some disc swag over the holidays. Here’s to hoping your weather has been good enough to use it.
8. If you have a backyard set-up like Christina Linthicum you wouldn’t need good weather to go practice. Just watch out for those windows.
