Tournament Throwback: 2016 Texas States Championship

Get a look at Brazos Park East, home of this weekend's Waco Annual Charity Open DGPT event

After the Disc Golf Pro Tour season kicked off in Arizona, the series heads east to Waco, Texas, for the Waco Annual Charity Open. The three round PDGA A-Tier begins Thursday with one round a day, finishing up on Saturday. While there is no video footage of the 2016 WACO, the 2016 Texas States Championship played in early April took place at the same course and was covered by Jomez Productions.

The course at Brazos Park East, nicknamed “The Beast,” will be an abrupt change from the wide open spaces and short grass of the desert Southwest and brings a unique Jekyll and Hyde feel. The Beast’s front nine features classic park style golf, with only a handful of trees defining the fairways and roadways, paved walking paths, and a few mandatories keep the players honest.

The back nine transitions significantly to tight fairways carved through thick trees and undergrowth. Not only is navigating the vertical obstacles important, but competitors must negotiate numerous elevation changes and some tricky greens.

Let’s take a look at Zackeriath Johnson at last year’s Texas States Championship, eagling perhaps the Beast’s most picturesque hole, number 6:

He made that look easy, but hole 6 did not give up many strokes under par to the lead card.

Jomez was able to catch another eagle from the lead card during the final round. Eventual tournament winner Bradley Williams got the three on the tight par 5, hole 18:

You can check out all three rounds of the event here. That final round was played in the rain, while the first two rounds had strong winds for the field to deal with. Being in the early spring, similar conditions could be in store out in Waco again this year.
